about

Since In 2019 we host SQUARE WAVE: a live improvisation music event for modular synthesists. We have done over 15 editions, as we love bringing people together to make and enjoy modular synth music. Dozens of different people participated in structured improvisations. Some of them seasoned live performers. Some of them performing for the very first time in their life. This second SQUARE WAVE release is a celebration of those wonderful people and events. It is a compilation of ten recordings of duo improvisations from various SQUARE WAVE editions in 2022 and 2023. Enjoy the raw and pure performances with all the curiosity, imagination, hits and misses that come with live improvisation. We thank Fonz and his crew at De Hip for their continuous hospitality and support. We thank all the participants and visitors of the past SQUARE WAVE meetups and look forward to the upcoming editions! #getoutofthestudio #hitthestage #musicislife

==========

Structured improvisation in music is a concept common in jazz and various contemporary styles of music. Inspired by this we conceived a structure that supports the use of modular synthesizers as the primary instrument. The outlines of the SQUARE WAVE improvisation structure are:
- Each edition has 8 participants. This event is aimed at users of modular synthesizers such as Eurorack, Buchla, Serge, MOTM, Moog, etc. Bringing additional electronic or acoustic instruments is allowed. Participants can bring their system both patched and unpatched. Whatever they think is the best / nicest / most convenient / most exciting. A PA system is present. Participants can use mono or stereo out.
- Voltmeister provides a central analog clock and reset signal (quite literally a SQUARE WAVE) to sync the instruments of the participants.
- Through lottery drawing participants are linked together in duos and assigned a tempo (BPM). The tempo will be within the range of 60 - 160 BPM. So fate determines who improvises with whom and what the tempo is.
- Lottery drawing of duos is done by Voltmeister before each round. Lottery drawing of tempo is done by the duo, right before they start their performance.
- There are three rounds of four duo performances each round. A performance can last a maximum of 10 minutes. Voltmeister will indicate to the performers when the final two minutes have commenced.
